I bet that you, like many others, love to celebrate Halloween each year. But, have you ever wondered how the haunted night came to be? Well, around 2,000 years ago, in the Celtic culture, the celebration of Samhain took place on November 1st. This ancient holliday was in order to mark the end of the harvest season. The Celts believed that the night before the boundary between the living and dead was blurred. They believed this allowed spirits into the world of the living. The Celts would light bonfires and wear animal skin costumes to prevent the dead from disturbing them. When Christianity spread through Celtic lands the festival of Samhain was merged with All Saints’ Day (AKA All Hallows’ Day). So, the night before, known as All Hallows’ Eve, eventually became the candy and costume filled Halloween we know today.
