Soccer in St. Louis

In the new craze surrounding the Saint Louis Soccer team, our city's rich history of the sport has been somewhat forgotten, so we wanted to share this snip of history with you. Soccer has a rich history in the city of Saint Louis, Missouri. The sport was introduced to the city in the late 1800s, when European immigrants began to settle in the area. These immigrants brought their love of soccer with them, and the sport quickly gained popularity in Saint Louis.

The first organized soccer team in Saint Louis was formed in 1882. The team was called the St. Louis Soccer Club, and it was made up of a group of English immigrants who wanted to play the sport they loved. The team played their first game against a local baseball team, and although they lost, they continued to play and improve.

By the early 1900s, soccer had become one of the most popular sports in Saint Louis. The city had several teams, including the St. Leo's Club, the St. Matthew's Club, and the St. Ambrose Club. These teams played against each other in local leagues, and the matches were often highly competitive.

In 1913, the United States Football Association (now known as the United States Soccer Federation) was formed, and Saint Louis was one of the founding members. This helped to further legitimize soccer as a sport in the city and allowed Saint Louis teams to compete against teams from other parts of the country.

In the 1920s, Saint Louis became a dominant force in American soccer. The city's team, the St. Louis Soccer Club, won the National Challenge Cup (now known as the U.S. Open Cup) in 1920 and 1922. They also won the American Soccer League championship in 1922 and 1923.

In the 1950s, soccer in Saint Louis began to decline in popularity. The city's teams struggled to attract fans, and many of the top players began to move to other parts of the country. However, the sport never completely died out in Saint Louis. There were still local leagues and amateur teams that continued to play.

In recent years, soccer has experienced a resurgence in Saint Louis. In 2019, the city was awarded a Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion team, which is set to begin to play in 2023. This has helped reignite interest in the sport and given local fans something to be excited about. In conclusion, soccer has a long and storied history in Saint Louis. The sport was introduced to the city by European immigrants in the late 1800s and quickly gained popularity. While the popularity of soccer in Saint Louis declined in the mid-20th century, the sport never completely died out. Today, with the arrival of an MLS team, soccer is once again on the rise in Saint Louis, and it is poised to become one of the city's most popular sports once again.
