What Not to Get Your Valentine

Abby Winter

With Valentines Day around the corner, there seems to be classic and go to gifts that every person either receives or gets for their significant other. There are the basic flowers, chocolate, candy, etc. Some people try to be unique and get their significant other something that is pretty wild. Here is what not to get for your significant other, because quite frankly, these are boring or just bad.

Last-Minute Grocery Store Flowers

While flowers can be a wonderful gift, purchasing a last-minute bouquet from the grocery store often comes off as impersonal and thoughtless. choose a more unique bouquet that fits your Valentine’s personality. Last-minute purchases often feel rushed, which doesn’t say much about your thoughtfulness.

Exercise Equipment or Fitness Subscriptions

Giving your partner a piece of exercise equipment or a gym membership can unintentionally send the wrong message. It may suggest that you think they need to change their body or lifestyle, which could be hurtful. Unless your partner specifically mentions they want such a gift, it’s better to avoid this one.

Generic Gift Cards

While gift cards are practical, they often feel like a lack of effort or imagination. There’s nothing wrong with a gift card in certain situations, but on Valentine’s Day, it can come off as impersonal. A meaningful gift that reflects your partner’s interests and preferences shows that you truly care.

Toys or Gag Gifts

Gag gifts can be fun in the right context, but giving a toy or novelty gift on Valentine’s Day can trivialize the occasion. Unless you’re in a lighthearted relationship where humor is a core part of your connection, avoid gifts that could undermine the seriousness or significance of your love.

Expired or Low-Quality Chocolates

Chocolate is a staple of Valentine’s Day, but giving your partner a box of stale or low-quality chocolates will leave a bad taste, literally and figuratively. If you opt for chocolates, go for premium quality or even artisanal treats. Your partner deserves a sweet indulgence that reflects your care, not something cheap or expired.
