Music Recommendations: Kairos Edition

By Elizabeth Barton '20

The Marianist Retreat Center – a place with the vibes of an old folks home, but at the same time some of the best old folks home vibes you will ever come across in your life. Being home from Kairos now it is very much #SadDiscipleHours, but after having such an amazing Kairos experience I thought I’d share some of the songs that we had on our Kairos playlist, as well as a couple extra jams that we listened to over the last couple days.

"Praying" by Kesha

This turned out to be kind of our song of Kairos. It seems a little cheesy and it definitely is but as soon as it played all the leaders kind of knew that this was gonna be our song. The best part is definitely when it hits the chorus cause then you can kind of scream it, this song also MUST be blasted at full volume or you’re doin' it wrong.

"Right Where You Should Be (feat. Ashe & Louis Futon)" by Quinn XCII

This one every time just made everyone jam out. It wasn’t actually played until the last day when it was requested by Jane Miller and it was on repeat for the rest of the time we had left at the retreat center. As soon as the song played everyone started to jam out in their chairs and I got several nods of approval for playing it (but all creds to Jane of course).

"Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)" by Hillsong UNITED

The obvious church banger. This song just gets everyone in the mood every time we sing it. Oceans was one of the songs we sang during mass at Kairos that everyone just sang wholeheartedly and it really set the tone for everything that would come afterwards.

"Rescue" by Lauren Daigle

What would a Kairos playlist be without some Lauren Daigle? This one just always gets you in the feels. The Kairos leaders were feelin pretty emo on our way home after the retreat and we ended up blasting this one and singing it in my car on the drive back. This one is also a song that must be blasted at full volume.

"Riff Off (from Pitch Perfect)" by The Barden Bellas, The Treblemakers, and The Bu Harmonics

This one is definitely the wild card, but I had to include it for the sake of the leaders. When we arrived to setup on Sunday night and got dinner, we felt the need to go do a Target run and this song along with several others from the Pitch Perfect soundtrack ended up being blasted in the car. Fun fact after we got back to the retreat center from target we tried to watch Pitch Perfect and tried for an hour and a half to set it up on the projector screen that the center had. We eventually gave up because it just was NOT working at all and I still have the movie rented on my Amazon Prime account until March 24th.
