  • Signing Off

Man, oh man what a year it has been. I started this long journey on the website sophomore year making videos and taking notes. Now leading my senior year, a team of sophisticated and upbeat young ladies. Opening senior year up I was ready for any challenges and the road to graduation seemed far away. As we met at each meeting ideas flooded the rooms. I had many memorable parts of my senior year such as DJing the Viz Bash or taking home the trophy for Dancing With the Teachers. I could go on and on about how great my senior year was at Viz. My classmates and the morning class that brought me so much joy. As we end the year strong on a bagel party, I look back at all the memories made. Inside the classroom and cooking up articles. It truly was a treat to be able to lead this group of people and make such masterpieces and works of art (shoutout our tik tok that blew up). If there is anything I would like to leave you with its this; get involved, cherish the memories, and never forget your Viz girls. This is Emma officially signing off. Thank you it has been a treat. If you ever need to find me I’ll probably be on the pickleball courts.

  • Top 4 worst exams I have had to take

As I finish up my junior year of high school here at Viz, I thought that I would run through the 4 hardest/worst exams I have had to take here at Viz (most of them being in my junior year). Through this I hope I can offer some advice (and anxiety) to those to are taking these courses next year. I will also be ranking the following exams 1-10 (10 being the hardest) Freshman Year Biology Midterm- 7.5/10 This exam was particularly hard because I had never taken a class like Mrs. Benigno' s before and it was difficult to adjust to it. While it was a while ago, I do remember looking at pig parts over and over to memorize them, which was brutal. By the next semester I had her class down to a science (pun intended) and I did significantly better on her final. Also, her class prepared me extremely well for junior year AP Bio. Junior Year AP Bio Midterm- 9.5/10 This exam was the BANE OF MY EXISTENCE. It was horrible. I did very well on it…but at what price? My biggest advice for this class is KEEP EVERYTHING because you don’t want to spend precious studying time working on your binder, begging girls to send you photos from past labs. Dissoi Logoi CC English Midterm Paper-8.0/10 The feeling when I finally submitted this paper…words cannot describe. I poured my heart and soul into this 11 page paper over MONTHS and MONTHS. It gets a 8/10 only for the amount of work, it was extremely time consuming. I had also never done an English paper like this one before, so it was all new. But Mrs. Shortt is an excellent teacher, and she helped me throughout the writing process. My advice for girls taking her class is to chose a topic that interests you for this paper. My topic was family farming, which I know sounds so boring, but it really interested me, which made the writing process much easier. ALL OF MY FRENCH EXAMS-7.0/10 This one is a shocker, primarily because language exams are usually not as hard as core subject exams. Furthermore Madame Marquart prepares us for our exams extremely well-and usually does not make the exams unnessicary difficult at all. The reason why I usually do worst on these French exams is because I underestimate them. I usually only study for a few hours the night before and even then I am more worried about another subject such as math or science. My advice towards underclassmen, and myself, is to not underestimate these language exams. They are still assessments, and there are ways to better prepare yourself (like not waiting till the last minute).

  • Best Places for Prom Pictures

As we all know, Viz's prom is this Saturday. I'm sure everyone will be looking their best, so here are some places that you can take photos with your friends or your date: Forest Park Forest Park is one of the highlights of St. Louis. The scenery is beautiful, and it's large size gives you plenty of different backgrounds for your photos. Lafayette Park If you live in the city, this is the place for you! Lafayette Park has gazebos, bridges, and other structures that will make your photos stand out (if you go here, I dare you to take some pics on the playground). The Arch The most iconic structure in St. Louis, this location is sure to make your photos unique to our city. Photos by the Mississippi River would be a beautiful touch. The Cathedral of Basilica This historic building would bring a special vibe to your photos. Beautiful inside and out, there are plenty of awesome photo opportunities at this location.

  • St. Patrick's Day

Being an Irish Catholic girl in St. Louis there is not a single holiday that I feel more connected to that St. Patrick's Day. Seeing everyone in green at the Dogtown Parade fills my green heart with glee. Not only do I feel a connection to St. Patty's because of my heritage, but also because of my family and friends. My brother's birthday is on St. Pattys, and I always have memories of going to the parade, and coming home to my moms delicious corned beef and potatoes. One of my best friends, Kathleen Reed, is also ginger and does irish dance. It was incredible to see her on St. Paddys, in her natural state among so many gingers. Waking up on St. Patricks day in her household, where everyone is ginger except for her dad, was amazing. Obviously going to the parade is so much fun, getting candy and beads throw at you and trying to find the closest bathroom in Dogtown. When I went to bed that Sunday night, I felt like I had succeeded what my ancestors had wanted me to accomplish. And of course, I wore green all day, I am not going to get pinched!!

  • Meeting Jackson Mahomes

I woke up on February 18 not knowing it would me a monumental day in my life. It was an average Sunday in Dallas, Texas when I finished my final day of a 3 day volleyball tournament. Feeling on top of the world, I packed my things, left the hotel, and got lunch with some of my teammates and my dad. After this, I journeyed to the airport. I checked my bag and traveled through the security line. Once I was finished, I looked around the airport, taking in the scene. My dad and I both saw something and immediately made eye contact. Then my coach came up to us. "Is that Jackson Mahomes?", we all said in unison. After looking at Jackson's Instagram and seeing he was in the same outfit as 3 hours before, we realized it definitely was Jackson Mahomes. I knew that this was a once in a lifetime experience, and that I had to get a picture with the Tik Tok influencer and brother of a Super Bowl champion. As he left the security line, my dad called out to him, "AYO, Jackson!". In that moment, history was made with this photograph: I am incredibly grateful that life allowed my to cross paths with the legend himself.

  • Spring Break Necessities

As Spring Break quickly approaches many Vivettes are wondering what items they cannot afford to forget on their travels. What items are a must and what items are simply just not as important. Here is our list of spring break necessities 2024! First off, whether you are going on a beach or snow vacation, make sure to bring one extra outfit. You may spill and stain an outfit so you need to wear a different one or you may just need an extra outfit for something. This is definitely a necessity. Another essential that could be for any type of vacation is a pair of sunglasses. Sunglasses are items that people tend to forget but they are definitely essential for any vacation. Chargers are for sure a must bring item for any trip. Make sure to bring your phone charger, air pod charger, or even computer charger. It can be easy to forget because you have to pack these last minute, but they are truly an essential. There are many toiletry products that are essential for a trip. First off, make sure to bring a hairbrush, hair ties, a razor, feminine products, and deodorant, toothpaste. Another must need essentials are skin care products like moisturizers, Chapstick, and DON'T FORGET SUNSCREEN. Finally, the last thing I recommend you bring is accessories and small items like underwear, socks, jewelry, hats, slippers, or a purse or wallet if you want to pack that. Accessories are important for Spring Break and are must brings. Hope this helps with any packing worries you may have! Make a ton of memories but remember to stay safe!

  • Is Pookie the Correct Term to Call Your Partner?

Made popular as of recent, the word “Pookie” has been circulating the internet. Used as an endearing term to describe one’s partner, similar to the use of “Sweetheart” or “Honey”. Brought to light by Campbell Puckett (also infamously know as “Pookie”) and her husband Jett Puckett. He is seen in viral TikTok’s describing his wife’s activities, food, or outfit details while using the term Pookie. But Does this term work for everyone. Derived from the term “Pookie Bear” the word is seen as sweet affectionate nickname for a significant other. Not all couples can get away with this pet name. Though it is cute and has a nice ring, the word itself fits a very niche group of people. Many people would not enjoy being called Pookie as it can be seen as a term for a “weak, shy, and meek” person. By no means does every person who enjoys being called this fit these stereotypical traits. Yet, others still classify this word in the same category as darling, babe, and honey. Depending on the personality of the theoretical “Pookie” their opinion on being referred to by this pet name will differ. Personally, if I was ever called Pookie in an unironic way I would not enjoy it. My advice is before you go out this Valentine’s season with the intention to call your loved one “Pookie” to reconsider and give it a little thought before you make your date awkward.

  • Single on Valentine's Day

Valentines Day: An exciting day for couples, where they often go out to nice dinner buy extravagant gifts and receive flowers. But this is not the same for everyone. Valentines’ day doesn’t only have to be celebrated by cute couples but also can be enjoyed by singles. You may be thinking, “But how would I celebrate this holiday?”. Well, here are some ideas for you… Treat yourself to a spa day Buy yourself flowers Go to dinner with some friends Have a cozy night in with some friends Go on a shopping spree Watch a show with your family Try a new recipe Reach out to friends and family you haven’t talked to Although these are cliché, Valentines can be celebrated by everyone. Ultimately it is just a day to spread joy and positivity. So go out smile and use it as an excuse to treat yourself to something nice.

  • Least Favorite Candy

There are many things to think about when it comes to Valentine's Day. Some people think about chocolate and roses, others think about conversation hearts. However, personally I think conversation hearts are the worst candy. Besides their kind meanings, their chalky texture and unsettling taste has no comparison to chocolate or other candies provided for Valentine's day.  On the other hand, Reese's peanut butter cups in a heart shape is superior to all candies. Reese's peanut butter cups are perfect for all year round, but the heart shape makes it perfect for Valentine's day. So this year, when you are picking out candies to give as Valentine's maybe re-think buying concentration hearts and think about a candy that are more enjoyable.

  • The Aqua Owls

The strong, spirited Visitation Academy high school swimmers call themselves the Aqua Owls. They started the season off strong with Swim Across America to raise money for cancer research. Unfortunately, Swim Across America was cancelled seconds before they got into the water, due to the thunderstorm that had started abruptly. Your Aqua owls survived and thrived through the beginning of the season, practicing, and preparing for meets. Despite the Swim Across America cancellation our spirits were high, and they started the season off strong. This swimming season has been nothing short of unpredictable. From icy weather conditions, broken glass in the pool, to viral illnesses all respectively taking their toll on the Visitation Swim and Dive team, this has been an incredibly challenging season for swimmers and divers alike. However, even having endured a rough ratio of about 5:4 meets to practices, this team has maintained a resilient spirit that refuses to quit. Waiting for the Brentwood YMCA pool to recover from the glass incident, the team was confined to only a mere hour at the Kirkwood YMCA. Despite the two lanes and the shortened practice time, the Visitation Aqua Owls managed to get in about a mile and a half of hard work in preparation for yet another meet, theis time versus John Burroughs. Although there will always be adversity, the Visitation Academy Swim and Dive team truly demonstrates that you must “just keep swimming.” There are two important events coming up for our Aqua Owls. Leading up to conference and state, the swim team often looks forward to a point in the remaining weeks of the season called “taper.” This is the point when practices become bursts of sprinting and long periods of rest; the exact opposite of what a typical practice would look like. However, to do this effectively, a swimmer needs speed. Although some remains, lots of this speed was lost somewhere between the two snow days, retreats, and cancelled practices. In light of this, it is safe to say that the team has their fair share of work cut out for them. However, this is no challenge for this determined team, only a bump on the road to success. They will continue to work hard and regain their speed in the coming practices. Thankfully, the season flew by (thanks to Christmas break, Kairos, the sauna incident, and snow days). The one-hundred-degree Brentwood YMCA pool may be shut down from the shattered sauna, leaving them with no pool to practice in, but it is all in God's plan, and the team trusts that He will guide them to victory at the state meet. They may not have a pool. They may not have enough carpool drivers. They may not have learned our cheer. But they have an amazing team full of aqua swimmers and divers surviving and thriving. It has been a great season, and they are so grateful for this opportunity to swim, and "Swim Fast" in the words of Paul Stoecklin.
