  • 2023 Volleyball Lineup

This season on varsity we have five seniors, five juniors, two sophomores, and two freshmen. Starting off with our seniors we have Lily Cofer as a 5’9 outside hitter. Next, we have Brooke Menke as a 5’7 libero, then we have Carlee Saur as our 5’10 middle hitter. Our last two seniors are Tori Brennan who is a 5’5 right side hitter, and finally Abby Roy as a 5’4 defensive specialist. The seniors are excited for their last ride not only together but with the whole program. They have all been with the program for all four years of high school and not only grown as players but people throughout their time in Viz Volleyball. It’s bittersweet but they can’t wait to spend it with everyone. This year’s senior captions are Lily Cofer and Brooke Menke, and they are ready to help lead this team to victory. Now for our juniors, first up is Evangelia Bonifacio who is a 5’6 outside hitter, then we have Giada Staley as a 5’8 middle hitter. Our next juniors are Audrey Sprich, she’s a 5’7 defensive specialist, and Morgan Dalebout a 5’6 setter. The last junior on the team is Anna Mccarthy a 5’5 outside hitter. The juniors this year are putting in work everyday as next year will be their last time and they are getting ready to lead the time next year. For our sophomores we have Sofia Gunther a 5’7 outside hitter and Audrey Piontek a 5’5 setter. Finally, we have our two freshman, Savy Raphael a 5’7 middle and Mia Moore a 5’6 middle hitter. Our underclassman are building off their skills everyday and becoming better volleyball players every day. The team has been putting in a great amount of work in everyday, they are growing as a team every minute. The program is trying to build the dynasty for the future of Viz, not only do the coaches try to instill volleyball skills but also life lessons. They learned about something called BCD, which stands for blame, complain, and defend. The coaches make sure the girls know that once a situation occurs on or off the court, they shouldn’t look at the negative sides of it but look on how they can fix their mistakes moving forwards. They also make sure the girls know that what they are doing is a team sport and they can’t just focus on themselves during matches or even practice. Their outlook is that they are a ship trying to move forward and if the ship gets an anchor (someone focusing on themselves) then it will only pull the team down instead of moving forward. All the girls are very excited for the season and cannot wait for what the future holds for them!

  • I Met Jacob Sartorius

The day is February 10, 2018. My sister Emma, her friend Mattea, and I bought the world renounced pop artist of the century, Jacob Sartorius, Hit Me Back Tour VIP tickets, and today would be the day that we see him in concert. In the mid afternoon, I put on my black lululemon leggings, adidas superstars, and my purple sweatshirt that says in crikut iron on vinyl "Hit Be Back Tour" on the front and "Abby" on the back. I straighten the front of my hair, put on my great lash mascara, and sparkly lip-gloss. I am now officially ready to wait in the two hour line outside the Pageant in 30 degree weather to meet Jacob. Although I went through vigorous conditions and almost froze my whole face off, my homemade sweatshirt kept me comfort. The poster I spent multiple hours on for Jacob, did in fact get discarded as I entered the door by a security guard, but I didn't let that get to me. Mattea, Emma, and I were matching from head to toe. After two hours of waiting in line, we finally met the front. We walked through black curtains to reveal Jacob standing there, and his jaw dropped because of how good we looked in our matching sweatshirts. We sat down on a black pleather couch to take pictures and he asked us what gang we were in. Emma responded with "the Gucci gang". Then he asked what our favorite song was and Emma said "Rolex" and started singing it. Jacob knew he had to whip his phone out to video tape us all singing Rolex together. The camera man tried to tell him he didn't have time, but Jacob cut him off and said that we were worth it. Together, we all made a video singing Rolex together and dancing and Jacob uploaded it to his Instagram story. We hugged and said goodbye to him, then walked to the area where we would watch him in concert. It took him two hours to come out, but it was all worth it. He sang happy songs, sad songs, did body rolls, outfits changes, and famous tiktok dances. Everyone around us kept saying to us "omg you're the people on Jacob's story" and then would high five us. It was such a great day. I posted it on Instagram and it was the first photo of mine to get over 70 likes. I scored in many ways that day. I went to bed grinning, and haven't showered since he hugged me. Jacob will always live with me through that hug.

  • Dolan Twins Comeback

Today, in 2023, tiktok stars like Bryce Hall, Noah Beck, and Vinny Hacker are obsessed over by teenage girls everywhere. But back in the good old days, when people had attention spans longer than 15 seconds, youtubers ruled the influencer scene. Recognize the names Ethan and Grayson Dolan? If not, you were probably living under a rock for a good chunk of the 2010s. From challenge videos to travel vlogs with other creators, these twin brothers made a huge name for themselves on the internet. Creative and entertaining videos were dropped weekly until the Dolans began a social media hiatus in 2021. While fans were sad to see Ethan and Grayson’s pretty faces leave their screens, they were still supportive through the twins’ time offline. On July 19th, 2023, after around two years of radio silence, both brothers took to Instagram to announce the release of a short film they created together. Titled “Nothing Left to Give”, the film was written, produced, and directed by the Dolan twins. Their project will premiere at HollyShorts Film Festival in August. These brothers have grown up online, always showing love and respect towards their fanbase. As an avid watcher of their videos, I think it’s amazing to see their transition from sitting in front of a camera on their purple couch to working behind the scenes to fulfill their other creative aspirations.

  • Soccer in St. Louis

In the new craze surrounding the Saint Louis Soccer team, our city's rich history of the sport has been somewhat forgotten, so we wanted to share this snip of history with you. Soccer has a rich history in the city of Saint Louis, Missouri. The sport was introduced to the city in the late 1800s, when European immigrants began to settle in the area. These immigrants brought their love of soccer with them, and the sport quickly gained popularity in Saint Louis. The first organized soccer team in Saint Louis was formed in 1882. The team was called the St. Louis Soccer Club, and it was made up of a group of English immigrants who wanted to play the sport they loved. The team played their first game against a local baseball team, and although they lost, they continued to play and improve. By the early 1900s, soccer had become one of the most popular sports in Saint Louis. The city had several teams, including the St. Leo's Club, the St. Matthew's Club, and the St. Ambrose Club. These teams played against each other in local leagues, and the matches were often highly competitive. In 1913, the United States Football Association (now known as the United States Soccer Federation) was formed, and Saint Louis was one of the founding members. This helped to further legitimize soccer as a sport in the city and allowed Saint Louis teams to compete against teams from other parts of the country. In the 1920s, Saint Louis became a dominant force in American soccer. The city's team, the St. Louis Soccer Club, won the National Challenge Cup (now known as the U.S. Open Cup) in 1920 and 1922. They also won the American Soccer League championship in 1922 and 1923. In the 1950s, soccer in Saint Louis began to decline in popularity. The city's teams struggled to attract fans, and many of the top players began to move to other parts of the country. However, the sport never completely died out in Saint Louis. There were still local leagues and amateur teams that continued to play. In recent years, soccer has experienced a resurgence in Saint Louis. In 2019, the city was awarded a Major League Soccer (MLS) expansion team, which is set to begin to play in 2023. This has helped reignite interest in the sport and given local fans something to be excited about. In conclusion, soccer has a long and storied history in Saint Louis. The sport was introduced to the city by European immigrants in the late 1800s and quickly gained popularity. While the popularity of soccer in Saint Louis declined in the mid-20th century, the sport never completely died out. Today, with the arrival of an MLS team, soccer is once again on the rise in Saint Louis, and it is poised to become one of the city's most popular sports once again. ----- Week of April 11, 2023- One of three articles published this week was written by a student. • How to Cure Your January Blues

After the relaxing Christmas break filled with joyous festivities, January often seems like the most boring month of the year. Your days become flooded with tests, homework, or sports and it becomes diffuclt to find things to look forward to. Waking up everyday becomes more and more diffuclt. Plus, the weather becomes dry and cold and you begin to get the longing feeling of missing the summer sun on your face. Personally, I believe that January has become one of my least favorite months, but this year I am trying to discover new ways to make this month full of blues more exciting. Trying new Foods. I know I love coming home and cooking up a warm meal that I get to enjoy, and it definitly always cures my winter sadness. I have started trying new Starbucks drinks or baking new recipes as a way to spice up my day. I have been cooking healthier dinners that I have been wanting to try for a long time. This can even be as simple as buying a new snack from the grocery store, just anything to spice up my day and make it more exciting. Listening to different music. One of the best feelings Is when you find a new song on Spotify and are immediately hooked. I have mostly always had the same music taste (aka Taylor Swift on repeat), but this month I'm trying to listen to different country or rap artists to make my car rides more exciting. The best part is music always puts me in a better mood so you can begin listening to it more in the shower or while cleaning in order to make you feel more motivated and to increase your mood overall. Switching up your Self Care. Lately I have been feeling less confident without my summer tan, but self care always makes me feel better in the winter. I have tried multiple new face masks and makeup products this month to change up my daily look. Also talking baths or maybe going to get a massage is a great way to destress in this tiresome month. Any of these ways are guarenteed to add something new and differnet to your tiresome daily routine in January. By truing these new things, your overall mood will improve, and I hope these tips take your January blues away.

  • Viz Basketball Update

Hey Viz Community! It's January now, so you know what that means. The basketball season is in full swing and your varsity Vivettes have had a historic start to the 2022-2023 season! We are now 14 games into our season and our record stands at 9-5 with one of the toughest schedules in the state. The team has shown tremendous grit and talent out on the court these past few weeks after two good tournaments. For starters, in our own Viz Christmas tournament, we placed 6th out of 16 really good teams. We advanced to the quarterfinals of the tourney and lost by a slim 5 points for our chance to the semifinals! We played some of our best basketball that Viz has seen in years, which was very exciting. The winner of our tournament this year was considered the #1 team in the country according to Max Preps, along with the runner up being last year's state champion, if that gives you a good idea of the competition! Viz had its best showing since 2004. Right after the new year, we jumped straight into the John Burroughs Invitational and won two straight games to go to our first championship since I've ever been here. Although we didn't bring home the winner, we learned a lot yet again after playing the best teams in the state. While our schedule has been tough, there is no doubt among the team that this is preparing us to make even more historic runs in late February and hopefully March! Thanks for all your support! -The Seniors Important upcoming dates to note: Challenge Cup Game- February 3 at 1:30 pm. Spirit Week Homecoming Game- February 10 at 6:30 pm. Senior Night Game- February 16 at 5:30 pm.

  • 2023 New Year Playlist

Imagine this: you are already 3 weeks into the new year and you proceed to get in the car to head to school. Before you reverse your car out of the garage, you cue your music for the ride when the unthinkable happens…you haven't made a 2023 playlist. Now, you may be asking yourself why this is such a big problem so I shall explain. You see, when you have not created a 2023 playlist, you cannot truly embrace the new year as you are stuck in 2022 based off your music. The moment you create a 2023 playlist, your energy is able to transfer into the new year and the promise of a great 2023 is guaranteed. But don't just take my word for it, take the word of the geniuses behind this concept, Claire Williams and Katherine Williams. How to start: First gather your closest friends, ones with good music taste of course. Then create a shared playlist on Spotify. If you have Apple Music, I think I should tell you it isn't the same so you can't participate. Sorry I don't make the rules, well I do but anyways. Then comes the hard part, determining the vibe you want. You are allowed one song to represent what you want from the New Year so CHOOSE WISELY. Let me tell you, it doesn't come easy. From personal experience I struggled, but that goes to show the gravity of the situation. If you are still stuck, have no fear, I will share a couple of current 2023 songs. Starting off with a winner is Jacie Tottleben's 2023 song: P.Y.T (Pretty Young Thing) by Michael Jackson Another solid pick goes to Niki Thoman with the song Billie Jean by Michael Jackson As you can see, Michael Jackson songs are dominating the ranks for 2023 songs and honestly I am here for it. Since you the rules forbid using someone else's song, I have composed a list of songs that are up for grabs: Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood: A classic blend of country and pop that gets the whole crowd going, a top draft so pick it quick One, Two Step by Ciara: No description needed…. Elevate by BTR: A nice little throwback to reminisce on the good old days while simultaneously taking your new year to the next level Come On Eileen by Dexys Midnight Runners: Personally this was my second choice so I think this is a great candidate for anyone looking to blend the old with the new for 2023.

  • Going Back to School Between Thanksgiving and Christmas Break

I think it is safe to say that for Viz girls, or any student in general, the time in between Thanksgiving and Christmas is rough when it comes to school. Finishing up units, reviewing for exams, studying for exams, the list goes on and on. Meanwhile, you’re still trying to be happy for Christmas and in the holiday spirit! We’ve all been there. Most of us are currently there. And although I can’t offer much help in this article, I can offer much sympathy. It’s hard to keep your spirits up and look on the bright side when for three weeks it seems like time moves a hundred times slower. It’s hard to focus on Christmas break when you have a million things on your mind. And it. Is. Hard. When the stress of an exam grade outweighs the excitement of having a couple weeks to relax. Make sure to check in on your friends, take care of yourself, and overall have a good plan that works for you as to how to study for exams. With all that being said, the annual Viz-Priory dance is in four short days as of this article’s posting! One other thing to look forward to that is much closer in the future! We love you vivettes, hang in there!
